30 in 30: Day 09 (in which I hold back a rant and finish quickly — really, this is the first time that’s happened!)

Best scene ever

(You’ve been warned.)

(Seriously, don’t read any further if you don’t want the ending of Kushiel’s Dart spoiled for you.)

And again, we explore my hopeless romanticism.

I cannot give you a basic plot summary of the book; if you haven’t read it and like spoilers (or if you have read it and need a refresher course) the Wikipedia article is quite sufficient. I am crap at summaries, however, and my words cannot do Carey’s novel justice.

Prepared with knowledge of the book?

Best scene ever goes to….The Battle of Troyes-Le-Mont, where Selig is skinning Phedre alive and Joscelin challenges him to the Holmgang. And when all seems hopeless, Joscelin prepares to perform the terminus — the final act a Cassiline can do, killing himself and his ward simultaneously.

Just. Ah. That scene gives me chills when I read it, and I think it is the most romantic fucking thing in the world.

People think I’m weird for that. And I could go into a huge rant about peoples’ inability to face death or even – gasp – think about it in any real sense, but I’d rather not. Because it’s late and I’m tired and you know what. That’s not what this post is about.

So in the interest of staying on track…I’m done.
